Understanding and appreciating individual differences hasn’t always been a hallmark of American work culture, but personality assessment systems such as CliftonStrengths, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and Working Genius can provide valuable insights into how team members think, work, and interact with one another.

As Jim Cota explains in this month’s episode of Rare Insights, we have used several of these tools over the years in the quest for improved employee engagement and happiness. Most recently, everyone in the company completed the Working Genius assessment, which identifies six types of work contributions: Wonder, Invention, Discernment, Galvanizing, Enablement, and Tenacity. Understanding which of these come naturally to each team member can help in assigning roles and tasks that align with individual strengths, leading to increased job satisfaction and productivity.

Implementing these tools requires more than just taking an online survey. It involves open discussions about results, workshops to explore implications, and a commitment to applying insights in daily interactions. When used effectively, these assessments can lead to improved empathy, reduced conflicts, and more efficient collaboration.

However, it’s important to remember that these tools are not definitive labels. They are a light that can be shined for greater understanding and flexibility. By embracing our differences and leveraging our diverse strengths, we can create a more harmonious and productive work environment for all.
