The anticipation of entering the professional world brings a sense of eagerness, but it also comes with a lot of questions and concerns. I know that finding the right job will be an ongoing process, as I recall my previous experiences and recognize the skills I have gained throughout my education and internships. However, one of the most challenging aspects is determining whether a business aligns with my personal wants and priorities.

With new workplace dynamics, such as remote work and hybrid models, becoming more prevalent, my generation faces unique challenges in finding our niche. These changes offer flexibility and new opportunities, but they also add layers of complexity to our job searches. Navigating these uncharted waters requires us to be more discerning and proactive in our approach.

Finding a place where I belong starts with understanding my own values and priorities. What kind of work environment do I thrive in? Do I value a collaborative team setting, or do I prefer working independently? Is having a flexible work schedule important to me, or am I more comfortable with a traditional office routine? These questions can help guide my search and narrow down a list of potential employers.

I keep these questions in the back of my mind as I endure new experiences and work opportunities. In doing this, I begin to build my own definition of the workplace as I challenge myself to find the right culture where I know I can flourish. I find it beneficial to hear stories from colleagues about their own journeys in the workplace.

Many professionals struggle to find workplaces that balance a positive culture with opportunities for skill development. Some offices prioritize structure and protocol, adhering strictly to “by the book” practices, but fail to meet expectations for a supportive and engaging work environment. The key challenge is in finding a balance where both skill development and a positive, supportive culture can coexist. Maintaining that balance is essential—not only for the motivation and happiness of the employees, but also to the success of the business itself.

This observation has helped me shape my ideal definition of the workplace and better articulate where my priorities and work opportunities align. Although it is nearly impossible to find the perfect office right off the bat, being proactive and informed can increase my chances of securing a role that nurtures both my professional and personal development. While this journey may involve trial and error, it will offer valuable insights along the way.

I am grateful enough to have had the opportunities within a variety of internships to test different roles and industries, refining my interests and building relevant skills along the way. These glimpses into various work cultures have helped answer key questions in my decision-making process for my future career.

As a senior struggling to find my place in the professional world, I was fortunate to land an internship at Rare Bird, an office that showed me the perfect work environment does exist.

They not only possess impressive skills but also work with amazing clients who contribute to the office’s successful atmosphere. The culture is truly unique. Even in a typically stressful field, the welcoming environment alleviates the pressure that accompanies tight deadlines or intimidating presentations. It’s not uncommon to find more than one dog wandering around the office, providing a moment of joy and relaxation for everyone. This simple gesture shows the company’s commitment to creating a positive and inclusive workplace.

Because of the fascinating projects, the collaborative environment, and the growth opportunities, it’s turned out to be the perfect place for someone like me. My experience at Rare Bird has helped me discover my niche and restored my faith that finding an ideal, fulfilling job is truly possible.
