In the second installment of Rare Insights, a monthly video feature looking back at what we’ve learned over the last 25 years, our fearless leader recounts the time that Rare Bird flew to Boston to talk with Harvard Medical School about taking on their publishing wing—and helping the globally-recognized brand with its e-commerce efforts.
The turning point in this story is an important reminder for any business. “We really weren’t selling to Harvard,” says Jim Cota. “We were selling to people who had a problem they were trying to solve.”
Hey… GOOD-Morning Jim!
Just reading the September newsletter. Great as always… BUT
the “Flying to Boston” video caught my eye, or ear might be
more appropriate, since “Please Come to Boston” by Dave Loggins
is one of my favorite songs… OK, back on track. Watched the video
and loved the story. Well here’s the bonus, or rest of the story.
On YouTube the very next video was the Longaberger Basket (aka: IBM)
story. When you described the reactions of the first people you were
explaining the internet and WWW to I was transported back to your
Mom & Dad’s place in Indy. It was there, in their basement, where
your Dad showed me how to sign onto the web C:\ yad yad yda.
Yep… my first exposure to the web. I quickly learned how to search
for tornadoes and spent the next hours surfing storms. That memory
was stuffed way back in the gray matter somewhere and it was fun having it
surface because of your video. Kinda like coming full circle or
something,. 🙂 Just wanted to share that with you.
Hope all is going well. Hug Char and the kids for us.
Love ya.
